It’s been ten years since Scott Weiland passed away at 48 years old and to mark the anniversary, his estate is issuing a new recording, “If I Could Fly” which was written in 2000.   It will be released as a limited edition 7-inch single on December 19th backed by a live version of his 1998 solo single, “Barbarella”.  On his Facebook page, the latest post reads:

'A piece of Scott Weiland’s story that’s been held close for twenty-five years is finally here. Written in 2000 after the birth of his son, the track carries the honesty, warmth, and depth fans know so well.

This is the first unreleased song to surface from Scott’s archive since his passing - if you’ve ever connected with his voice, his writing, his performances, this one lands in a real way.'

“If I Could Fly” shows Weiland in a strong state of mind after having gotten married and having a new child.  The soft rock backing is optimistic and melodic.  At the time, Weiland was feeling inspired and wrote several beautiful songs in this time.  He was looking for a new start in a new century.

If I could fly I would pick you up and keep you safe from the headlights

If I could fly I would lift you up and pull you out of the mudslide

Back in 2000, Weiland was still in Stone Temple Pilots as they were working on material for their fifth album, Shangri-La-Dee-Da. There, one can find Weiland’s song for Noah, “A Song For Sleeping”, another lovely tribute to his son.  Weiland was on a roll with his ballad writing as “Sour Girl” was all over radio in 2000, and there were incredibly melodic songs with STP, “Hello, It’s Late” and “Wonderful”.

It’s unclear who the backing band is with Weiland on this newly released recording.

Weiland’s YouTube page has been active recently after a decade of silence.  In the last two weeks, music videos for Weiland’s solo songs, “I Know It’s Too Late” and “Missing Cleveland”, both from Weiland’s 2008 double album, Happy in Galoshes.
