After a turbulent 2025 that saw Josh Freese unexpectedly depart the Foo Fighters for reasons still undisclosed, the new year is already bringing brighter news for the 53‑year‑old drummer. Freese was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Drum Workshop during the NAMM Show on January 23.
Drum Workshop’s official statement highlights Freese as “one of the industry’s most versatile in‑demand freelance drummers,” praising his ability to move seamlessly across rock, punk, and new wave while adapting effortlessly to established bands. That adaptability was on full display during his two‑year tenure with the Foo Fighters following the death of Taylor Hawkins.
The company also underscored Freese’s extensive résumé, noting the long list of artists he has supported not only through drumming but also through songwriting. One of the most striking details in his biography is his early start: performing as a drummer at Disneyland at just 12 years old, a sign of a lifelong dedication to the craft.
Yesterday, Freese posted a photo taken with fellow Drum Workshop alum and another of alt. rock's best drummers, Stephen Perkins, commenting:
"Fun yesterday with long time friend and fellow old school DW artist Stephen Perkins."
Drum Workshop founder Don Lombardi, who has known Freese since his teenage years, praised his decades of growth, professionalism, and creative impact.
As 2026 unfolds, fans and colleagues alike are hopeful that Freese finds the next musical home that allows him to continue pushing his art forward.
