It may be worth the time to invest in Mammoth’s recent album, ‘The End’ from last year because it’s proving to be one of the best rock albums to feature grunge in recent times. "The Spell" has reached #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Of course, Wolfgang Van Halen stems from a hard rock family but he likes to add that grungy distortion to much of his music that can cut deep. Who said post-grunge was gone?
“The Spell” initiates the sound with a grinding funked up guitar riff before diving into a catchy verse about a lack of communication. The guitar spirals around building up to the chorus, “Whatever spell you’re under, bleeding away your wonder, we can work this out,” Van Halen reasons on the refrains, offering up an optimistic catchy sound as backing. It plays just like a #1 song’s chorus should.
On the second chorus, a ringing lead guitar line enhances the intensity before it leaps into a jumpier version of the initial intro riff for the guitar break. More lead guitar work and harmonies build up the final chorus before it closes with another grinding riff that jumps out of the speakers.
“Hi, my name’s Wolf, and I have a band called Mammoth. I just found out that the song, “The Spell” hit #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and this is absolutely crazy. It’s the fourth time this has happened which is four more times than I ever thought it would happen. When I’m in the studio, or I’m writing, it’s the last thing on my mind that something like this could happen. When it does, to find out there are so many people out there listening and enjoying kind of blows my mind. So I just wanted to record this and say ‘thanks so much’. If you want to come check us out live just go to Mammoth.band and see if we’re gonna come near you, and if not, then thank you and hope to see you soon.”
The music video is set in a dim performance space with four Wolfgang Van Halen’s playing the guitars, bass, drums, and singing. Of course, that reflects the one-man studio band Mammoth is with Wolfgang playing everything. This is the second #1 from ‘The End’ album by Mammoth and with other strong songs available on one of the best hard rock albums to feature grunge, we may see another single rise in the future.
