Sponge’s New Album Could Be Their Last

Detroit combo Sponge, one of the best bands to play post-grunge, gave a recent update that a new studio album is coming on October 5^th.

A Facebook post on August 4^th reads as both great and disappointing:

THE LAST* FULL LENGTH SPONGE STUDIO ALBUM COMING OCTOBER 5TH.

'*like a long line of Rock & Rollers before us we reserve the right to change our mind. Don’t worry though, while this might be the last studio album we will still be playing live, putting out live albums, compilations, and the occasional new tune when inspiration strikes.'

The band, led by singer/songwriter Vinnie Dombroski has been driving the Sponge train for decades, and while they have a large catalog at this stage in their careers, this may be the final station they pull into.  They have consistently been reaching out to fans on social media and actually upped the production by issuing three albums, two with unreleased material and one newly recorded covers album, ‘1994’. 

All three have been revelations for fans who had been around with the band back in the 1990s but because Sponge haven’t released any boxsets, the ‘Planet Girls’, ‘Electric Cattle Gods’ and the released from years ago, ‘Demo’d in Detroit’ have given fans more insight into their time during that decade. 

Sponge issued a short video with a clip of a new song coming but nothing official has been released as of yet.
