Pearl Jam recently set a live date for the Ohana Festival in late September yet there has been no word about the empty drummer seat in their band. Matt Cameron left a year ago and Pearl Jam have still not said if they have a drummer. If they do, then who? Stone Gossard played the up the mystery of it all when speaking on SiriusXM Radio recently.
“I love the mystery of it all. There’s not enough mystery in the world. I think the band is very excited that we’re actually getting to play. It’s been a while and the fact that we get to do it at Ohana makes it even doubly exciting. And the fact that nobody knows who’s going to play drums with us even makes it triply exciting. So, it’s our mystery wrapped in an enigma and we’re relishing in it right now.”
Mystique has circled around this band since Matt's departure, creating a fog thick enough to make it unclear as to who is within the inner circle. Fans wonder aloud around the web about potential candidates. Many expect an established veteran drummer, some suspect that a former Pearl Jam drummer could return, and some feel like it could be a lower profile drummer getting a step up.
Gossard has a right to be ‘in hiding’ with his crew. They certainly had an intriguing persona in the 1990s with media scrambling to get as much access to them as possible but the band often stepping away from the spotlight in secrecy about their future plans. Their lack of visual accompaniments to their singles like seemingly every other major artist for over a decade also forced Pearl Jam fans to use their imaginations to guess what was happening in the world of Pearl Jam.
