Foo Fighters have shared another darkly funny update on social media, announcing that guitarist Pat Smear has broken his foot and will miss the band’s three scheduled shows this month. The post, written in the band’s signature tongue‑in‑cheek style, reads:
“BREAKING NEWS! Pat Smear Bizarre Gardening AccidentIn the classic tradition of rockstars having bizarre gardening accidents, Pat Smear has apparently rung in the new year by smashing the shit out of his left foot. This means he’ll unfortunately be missing a few shows while the multiple broken bones in his foot heal. We’ll miss our beloved Pat as much as you will, but we want him fully healed and back on his feet as soon as possible.Beck and St. Vincent guitar wizard Jason Falkner will be filling in for Pat while he’s on the mend.”
The accompanying photo shows Smear smiling and lounging in a garden chair, further playing into the joke. The “gardening accident” reference is almost certainly a nod to Spinal Tap, the mock‑’80s metal band famous for its running gag about drummers dying in bizarre gardening mishaps.
The image is styled like an old National Enquirer cover, complete with absurd tabloid headlines such as “Aliens Spotted Warming Up for Spring Training” and “2026 Fried Chicken and Champagne Diet Tips.” The baseball reference may be intentional—Major League Baseball has its own long history of strange, off‑field injuries.
Despite Smear’s absence, Foo Fighters are determined not to cancel any dates. Jason Falkner will step in for the upcoming shows, including the January 10 performance in Mexico, the charity concert at the Kia Forum on Dave Grohl’s birthday, and the January 24 date in Tasmania, Australia.
